"In each of my homes I have a leopard room. I don't know why. I just like it." Ivana Trump. People Magazine, May 5th, 2009.

I am not going to insert any witty criticism or sarcastic remarks. I believe my readers know exactly what I am thinking with regards to Ms. Trump. Though, I would like to use this statement to illustrate my point about a new plague in America. This "new disease" has been around for decades. Ivana Trumps statement to People Magazine is just a symptom of this; a disease of misplaced trust. Her trust in materialism is echoed throughout American families today.

We are an amazing group of people; We are "Proud to be an American." (Excuse my momentary lapse into the redneck chest of lyrics, Mr. Greenwood.) As Americans, we strive to make things faster, easier, and more efficient to save time. We try to shoe-horn every precious moment of our shallow existence into our faux-leather shoes while precariously waving a flag of freedom and calling ourselves God-fearing. In reality, we are not progressing; We are running in place while in a trance.

We have cell phones that enable us to speak to anyone around the world at the push of a button. With all these minutes and hours saved due to using faster phones, what do we do with our time saved? Do we rush home to spend time with our children? Do we rush home to prepare a meal for our husband or wife? Or do we rush home to play video games or do we design a "Leopard Room?" Better yet, do we hurry home to worship God?

Lately, I have been paying close attention to the world around me. I have noticed a lot of sullen people seem to be searching for serenity within their purchases. I have found that most Americans believe that in purchasing new homes, cars, computers, I-Phones, etc., and that by "keeping up with the Joneses" they will find a secreted harmony. The "harmony" one might find in the confines of a new car or upon the keyboard of a new computer is fleeting, and the consumer will find more and more purchases are needed to achieve their momentary euphoria.

Pardon me Madonna Cicconne, but we are not "living in a material world." The evil one named Satan would love for the American People to continue to live in a deluded state while allowing consumerism and materialism to become his new golden calf.

Ephesians 6:12 states: "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places."

We live in a world full of diseases. Some are apparent, some of transparent, and some mask their true motivation DISTRACTION. Satan wants to distract all of humanity from his number one enemy, Our Lord Jesus Christ. He does this through mass consumerism/materialism to keep our mind off of worshipping Christ!

I write this as a very experienced and battle-hardened Christian. I was in a demonic alcohol/drug haze for sixteen years. After whipping the drug demon, I felt victory was around the corner, but then came another addiction. If I would have focused more on Christ and surrendered my will to His, I would be further down the road in my walk in faith.

The cure for this particular disease is to realign oneself with Christ through vigilant prayer and by obeying Christ's commandments:

Luke 10:27 "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself."

Interesting article, Chris. I agree... it seems that Christians in America have become distracting by wrestling with flesh and blood lately, instead of loving their neighbors.
